Overview
Up to 30% of the heat produced in your home maybe escaping through your roof if it is un-insulated. Even if you have insulation in your roof, you may still be losing heat if it is not up to current building regulations. Surpassing building regulations will ensure that you are insulating your home for the future.
Case Study Example
Anne has a 4 bedroom detached house 150m2 (1615ft2) in size with an annual heating bill of €1,600. Her attic had the usual 100mm of fibreglass insulation so she decided to upgrade to the recommended 300mm following a consultation from A-Rated Energy. Not only did Anne feel an immediate increase in heat of her home, this simple low cost measure now saves her over €250 a year on her home heating bill. Anne availed of €250 grant aid from the Home Energy Savings scheme to help the overall cost of this, which typically costs between €800 to €1,000 in total.
Sizing and Design
Attic Insulation offers a number of key benefits including:
• Reduction in heating bills
• Increased comfort levels
• Low capital costs
• Short payback periods
Home owners availing of attic Insulation should aim to achieve a U value of 0.20 w/m2K or better.
Typical Insulation materials used to a warm attic include semi-rigid insulation board as well as glass/mineral fibre batts. The insulation material you use should may depend on the depth of your rafters. The Insulation board will be insulated between rafters, leaving a gap between insulation and felt. There will also be a layer of insulation across the underside of the rafters to minimise heat loss.
Installation and Ventilation
Installing insulation properly is very important. Where insulation is installed between rafters, it is important that it is cut tight and is installed with no gaps. Gaps will result in insulation becoming non effective. Adequate ventilation in a roof is important to prevent condensation. Ventilation should be available at the opening of the eaves, which should never be blocked to allow air to pass between the insulation and the felt across the roof.
